This is my favorite (FOSS) forum discussion software. It has many good plugins and applications. I found one application to turn it in to a CMS, very easy to install, easy to set up and tweak. If you're a beginner looking for something simple with a good community and many features. Try this. It's very simple. Even if you're not a beginner with hosting or design it's still very nice.

I absolutely love the Vanilla forum software because the layout of the forum is much more user-friendly and modern than that of other forum software, and it also seems to have social networking features built into it! And the great thing is, there are many plugins you can get for it! I will definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to create a forum/social networking site!

There are not enough words to totally describe what Vanilla truly is. Imagine, being one of the first people who experienced windows prior to its official release... Vanilla can be what you want it to be... Give Vanilla a try, I am sure you will find it a great springboard for your site.
